how to drain gas from fuel injected harley

Posted on 7 August 20232 October 2023 by Sumansharma

Draining gas from a fuel-injected Harley-Davidson motorcycle is not a common procedure but may be necessary for certain maintenance or storage situations. Here are the steps to drain gas from a fuel-injected Harley:

Materials You’ll Need:

  1. Safety goggles and gloves (for personal protection)
  2. Drain pan or suitable container
  3. Wrench or socket set (if necessary)
  4. Empty gasoline container (optional)

Steps:

  1. Safety First:
    • Put on safety goggles and gloves to protect your eyes and hands.
  2. Work in a Well-Ventilated Area:
    • Ensure that you are working in a well-ventilated outdoor space to avoid inhaling gas fumes.
  3. Turn Off the Ignition:
    • Ensure that the motorcycle’s ignition is turned off.
  4. Locate the Fuel Tank Drain Plug:
    • Find the drain plug or valve on the bottom of the fuel tank. The location can vary depending on the Harley-Davidson model and year.
  5. Prepare a Drain Pan:
    • Place a drain pan or suitable container beneath the fuel tank to catch the gas as it drains.
  6. Open the Fuel Tank Drain Plug:
    • Using a wrench or socket set, carefully open the fuel tank drain plug. Turn it counterclockwise to open it. Be cautious not to overtighten or damage the plug.
  7. Drain the Gas:
    • Allow the gasoline to flow out of the fuel tank and into the drain pan. This may take a few minutes. If you have an empty gasoline container, you can use it to collect the gas for disposal or storage.
  8. Empty the Fuel Tank Completely:
    • Ensure that you remove all the gasoline from the fuel tank. Some residual gas may remain, so make sure it’s as empty as possible.
  9. Dispose of the Gas Properly:
    • Never pour old gasoline down a drain or onto the ground. Gasoline should be disposed of properly, following local regulations. Many auto parts stores or hazardous waste facilities accept old gasoline for disposal.
  10. Close the Fuel Tank Drain Plug:
    • Once the fuel tank is empty, securely close the drain plug by turning it clockwise. Ensure it is properly sealed to prevent any future leakage.
  11. Turn On the Ignition:
    • Turn on the motorcycle’s ignition. This may prime the fuel system, and you might hear the fuel pump running briefly.

Please note that draining the gas from a fuel-injected Harley-Davidson is not a routine procedure and should only be done when necessary, such as for long-term storage or maintenance work. If you have concerns about your motorcycle’s fuel system, it’s advisable to consult the Harley-Davidson service manual or contact a Harley-Davidson dealership for guidance or assistance.
